How To Shorten Your Drive To Work

Do you want to shorten your drive to work? Are you interested in arriving at your desk with minutes to spare?

Although shortening your commute might seem like a fantasy, it is an achievable goal. You just need to know how to streamline your routine. Read on to learn how to accomplish this.

Leave a Few Minutes Earlier

It sounds a bit strange, but leaving your house a few minutes earlier can actually shorten your commute time. This is because every rush hour has peaks and valleys of activity. At peak rush hour, there are more people on the road, resulting in a slower drive. However, at off-peak hours there are fewer people, and this results in a faster commute. Therefore, the goal is to catch the tail end of the off-peak rush hour. This may require you to do some research and experimentation to find the less busy times. For instance, you may find that leaving ten minutes earlier than usual lets you miss the 8 AM traffic snarl.

Investigate Different Routes and Modes of Transportation

Humans tend to be creatures of habit. Once we find something we like, such as a commuting routine, we’re often loathed to change it. However, just because you get to work the same way every day doesn’t mean this is the best way.

If you drive to work, you may want to think about trying out a different route. Look into local roads, highways, expressways, and byways to see if one of these or a combination of them gets you to work faster. You could also use a navigation app for calculating your commute using these different route options.

If you live in a metropolitan area, you likely have access to public transportation options. These can include buses, trains, trolleys, subways, shuttles, or ferry lines. You should try one of these transportation options to see if it gets you to work faster.

Modify your Exit Plan

Common sense tells us to choose the closest highway exit or train station stop to our office. After all, the closes stop or exit represents the shortest distance to your place of work. However, this doesn’t always translate accurately into the shortest amount of travel time.

Depending on how the highway or station exit is physically structured, the number of office buildings, and the number of commuters, it may actually take you more time to travel what seems like a short distance.

Therefore, you might want to consider whether the stops or exits before or after your usual one to see if you can get to your office faster from them. For example, if the subway stop before the one closest to your office lets fewer people off, this is an indication that there’s less foot traffic. Consequently, you will spend less time waiting for the crowd to disperse and get to your place of employment faster.

Work From Home

The best way to shorten your commute? Don’t commute at all!

Many companies now offer remote work. Instead of going into an office, you treat a portion of your home as your cubicle.

If you work remotely from home, you won’t have to drive at all. As a result, your drive will be shortened, and you’ll have extra time to do things like chores or self-care.

Last Words

Unfortunately, flying cars don’t yet exist, so the key to shortening your drive to work is to plan ahead. Therefore, you should research different transportation modes and route options, as well as departure times. In doing so, you can create a plan to get to your desk without feeling rushed or pressed for time.
